A termite mound; CT-scanned, 3D-printed in PLA, cast in bronze. The internal architecture of the colony preserved in metal. Exhibited at Sutton Gallery and at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA)

The source was a PLA print from CT scan data. We cast it directly into bronze through the lost wax method; preserving the internal geometry of the colony using this timeless process with a modern material; substituting wax for the PLA. The bronze had to hold the resolution of a CT scan. The tunnels, the chambers, the logic of how the colony builds; all of it had to survive the burnout and the pour. It did.
